Nelson Piquet Jr drives for Panasonic Jaguar Racing in the FIA Formula E World Championship. Piquet Jr won the inaugural championship in the exciting, fully-electric, street-racing series in 2014/15.
As son of three-time Formula 1 World Champion, Nelson Piquet Senior, motor racing is in the Brazilian’s blood. Nelson competes in FIA Formula E alongside fellow Blackcastle athlete Mitch Evans, and also races in his home country’s stock car championship.
Nelson’s FIA Formula E world title was achieved with China Racing in 2015, where he secured victories at Long Beach and Moscow and wrote his name in the history books as the first-ever winner of the new championship.
A seasoned professional in the world of motorsport, Piquet Jr has raced in many different disciplines. These include the Red Bull Global Rallycross Championship, where he secured four podiums in his first season in 2014 and finished fourth overall, and four years in the United States with NASCAR. He has also completed the Le Mans 24 hours and other endurance races on multiple occasions throughout his career.
During 2008 and 2009, the driver followed in his father’s footsteps by graduating to Formula 1 with ING Renault, where he teamed up with Fernando Alonso. Several strong performances, including a second place in the German Grand Prix, helped the team to fourth position in the constructors’ championship.
Prior to Formula 1, Nelson raced in the GP2 series where he formed his namesake team, Piquet Sports. In 2006, in only his second year in the championship, the driver finished as runner-up, after a season-long battle with the inimitable Lewis Hamilton, and surpassed his third placing overall of the previous year.
The athlete won the British Formula 3 championship in 2004, becoming the youngest champion in the series at just 19 years and 2 months old. This followed successes in South American Formula 3, including winning the series in 2002, and South American karting, where Nelson began his racing career.
